The Galaxy suspension, designed by Alessandro Masturzo, is the finalist in the catagory “Best Special Use Lamp” at the Venetian Smart Lighting Award, an accolade established by the Network of Light Enterprises in Veneto (LIV) to acknowledge Italian excellence in the field of lighting.
What have been the sources of inspiration, motivations, or market demands for the creation of this lamp/product?
“The design objective of Galaxy is to create an element capable of providing infinite combinations, thereby enabling strong coordination in illuminating various environments within the contract/home sector, due to the recurring identity of this “star” element. Hence, the name Galaxy, which conveys the concept of vastness aimed at communicating to designers, architects, and interior designers the customization potential of this product.”
What were the design challenges and obstacles overcome in production, as well as the research into materials/finishes/components, etc., for this lamp/product?
“Galaxy has a highly complex development due to the reduced dimensions of the module. Within this space, the issues of the single module and the connections between modules must be resolved: construction systems, assembly, weights and structural integrity, light transmission, and the feasibility of finishes are just a few of the design challenges faced in a minimal space, and their resolutions make Galaxy a lighting system of high design value.”
